But while the media questioned Dan s true talent and potential, Dan knew that the no-heighter was a fluke. He had never done it before, and now he was determined that he would never do it again.

I can t explain what happened that day, but I realized I would have to be
totally prepared for any eventuality in the future, says Dan. It took a few
weeks, and quite a few calls from friends, family, coaches and other
athletes. Then I was back into training and totally focused.

Dan s effort paid off almost immediately. Although he didn t compete at
Barcelona, a few months later Dan entered the decathlon event in Talence, France. There he set a new world record 8,891 points a record that still stands today. For Dan, he had proven to himself that he had what it takes to be the world s greatest athlete. But the public only remembered the no-heighter. To truly redeem himself, and earn the title he so fervently desired, Dan knew he needed the Olympic gold.

Dan went on to win two more world championships before the 1996 Olympic trials came around. Once again, all eyes were on Dan, and the event they watched most closely was the pole vault.on that second throw I gave it everything I had." He threw an Olympic record!

When asked about the struggles experienced in training for the Olympics, Oerter replied, "Barriers in life happen all the time. You have got to step it up. If you back down, you never learn anything about life or yourself." Later in his career Oerter did have Olympic coaches who would really push him but he always knew it was to make him better.

Al Oerter was also a great success in the business world. Ironically, he worked with computers and advanced technology. Currently, Al Oerter is living in Colorado. And he is still a lean, but powerful 260 pound man. Although he is retired, he stays quite busy as a motivational speaker for a variety of corporations and as a husband, father, and grandfather.

We thank Al for the opportunity to tell his story.........................
and gives them another reasons to take BFS.

BFS
By Elana Beedlove

BFS has made m have
so much more respect.
It makes me remember and
do the things I used to wanna
neglect.

It makes me push myself,
it makes me wanna succeed,
Because of BFS I know what
I really need.

I need to work hard, ush myself,
and try to be the best,
When you think of how the
body works,
why would ou wanna rest?

Push yourself, come on, faster ,
that s all Mrs. Young used to sa,
When running the mile
she was with everyone
every step of the way.

Everybody needs someone to
help you find the way.
I m glad I get to meet that person
every single day.

BFS isn only about the
physical:q@cΕ^ZCQOڔ4@Yx'փҰSgVFw +Sñ P2ioOS ʈ B*-FPw$?Egd.?SԢB Wnm&p7Ͽ3WEӕC+ 5xɟdѣZ@t%MWQgX*a}*

Strength Training

Whil strength and coordination have always been in her favor, LeeAnn's choice of sports is based more on passion than genetic gifts.
Sh makes her own choices regarding what sports to participate in, says Coach Sargent. If she is clearly inclned to any singe activity I'd have to say that it's exercise. She wants to be good at everything she does and she works hard at it.
Although she was exposed to weight training before high school, it wasn't until high school that she really got involved. I needed it to work on speed and strength for basketball and track, although right now I'm not doing as much.
The first thng she noticed was better tone. She also gained some weight and muscle mass, but keeps the latter to a minimum in order to excel early simultaneously at swimming, track, agility and strength sports. Too{ p7cle has its downside, and as far as women bodybuilders go, LeeAnn gives the group a thumbs down. They've just taken it a little too far, she says. Coach agrees.
I believe the fitness championships, not bodybuilding, set a better example of what weight training can do for a woman, says Sargent. Our female athletes have a better understanding now of weight training, although there are still lingering stereotypes. Right now we have more girls involved thatain, they should be paying attention to the possibility of a missed rep. All spotters should anticipate a miss when the reps are getting tough. If a miss is happening, then the back spotter should yell, Help. This command signals theside spotters to immediately help their teammate recover and get the weight back safely to the rack.

THE SIDE SPOTTERS
1. N
