During the rest of the year I try to get in one every third week. So, over the last six years, we re talking about 80 clinics.<BR><BR>Why do you still feel so enthusiastic about running BFS clinics?<BR><BR>For one thing, I still feel that I m a rookie because I m only six years into it. But then, as a teacher I m in my twenty-sixth year, and I still get excited every day getting up and going to work!<BR><BR>Would you share with us a favorite clinic experience?<BR><BR>I m always talking about keeping your eye on your target. I gave a clinic to a team in Flambeau, Wisconsin. They were 3-6, and after the BFS clinic they went on to the championships. The next year when I came in again, one of the boys who had been at that earlier clinic told me,  You know, Coach, I ve got to tell you about that  eye on the target thing. When we went for that State championship game we took our helmets off, and tootball or anything elseetermined that he would never do it again.<br><br> I can t explain what happened that day, but I realized I would have to be<br>totally prepared for any eventuality in the future, says Dan.  It took a few<br>weeks, and quite a few calls from friends, family, coaches and other<br>athletes. Then I was back into training and totally focused. <br><br>Dan s effort paid off almost immediately. Although he didn t compete at<br>Barcelona, a few months later Dan entered the decathlon event in Talence, France. There he set a new world record 8,891 points a record that still stands today. For Dan, he had proven to himself that he had what it takes to be the world sgreatest athlete. But the public only remembered the no-heighter. To truly redeem himself, and ear the title he so fervently desired, Dan knew he needed the Olympic gold.<br><br>Dan went on to win two more world championships before the 1996 Olympic trials came around. Once again, all eyes were on Dan, and the event they watched most closely was the pole vault.<br><br> I knew it was a big deal, says Dan.  But I wasn t worried in the least. It<br>was no longer an issue for me. I <br>wasn t even worried about the trials.<br> I had one goal; that was the gold. Not the bronze, not the silver. I knew exactly what I wanted and was counting the days to Atlanta. <bbrR>We needed more weightlifting classes because the kids wanted it. Having a class every day in one room wasn t enough, so the principal, the vice-principal and I made another weight room. We called BFS and bought four more squat racks and five more benches, and platforms and dumbbells and a hip sled. We bought all of it just for the new room and now we get about 300 kids going through the program every day.<BR><BR>What has been the effect of the BFS program at Riverton High School in regard to athletic performance?<BR><BR>Last year we made the state playoffs in football, which we felt great about because we only started seven seniors. The first year we had only about one month of lifting because the school had just opened up, so we were very weak. Now that we ve had a full two years, we re looking great and we re excited about the upcoming season.<BR><BR>How about the women s sports?<BR><BR>Our women s sports are doing great. Our volleyball team won the regions, and they re on the BFS program.<BR><BR>You have a master s degree in psychology. Do you find that the skills you learned in that field have helped you become a better coach?<BR><BR>Absolutely. Anybody who deals with the mind and behavior is always going to be talking about goal setting. Doing things for the future, doing things to get ready for the future.
