When he was a sophomore in high school he squatted 85 pounds and ran 5.2 in the 40. Says Holt, "Keith was very dedicated to what we were trying to do with conditioning. When he graduated from high school he more than doubled his squat and ran 4.4. And because of his dedication to our weight training program, Keith became the starting quarterback at the Air Force Academy and became one of the 13 athletes in NCAA history to rush and throw for 1300 yards in a season. My question is, 'What would have happened to tha kid who squatted 185 and ran 5.2 had he not participated in a program like Bigger Faster Stronger?'"
Chuck Peterson, offensive coordinator coach at Air Force, agrees, saying that he is impressed not only with Holt's ability to develop athletes through a strong strength and conditioning program but also with his devotion to getting those talented athletes seen by college coaches. Among the athletes on the current teams, Holt cites four players who he feels certain have the potential to play at the Division I level in college:
" Marcus Bunton, 5'9", a two-year starter at quarterback who possesses tremendous quickness. He runs 4.4 in the 40 and can squat 425 at 180 pounds bodyweight.
" Daniel Thomas, 5'9", a two-year starter at running back, a former class president and a football team captain. He runs 4.the ability to have the strength, the endurance and most important, the confidence that I could do it. Everyone in this program at Parma High School has benefited."
Ryan Tracy, Senior-TE & MLB

Clinician's Note: In June of 1994, Bruce Schlaich dreamed of winning a state championship. In 1996 Bruce, his staff and players made it happen. Preparation and hard work were consistently implemented to allow the dream to be a reality. Congratulations for playing your song and helping me to play mine.

Bob Rowbotham
Parma's BFS Clinician

Another key component of Bennett's program is box squats. We teach our athletes to box squat right off the bat. Besides taking a lot of stress off the knees because you don't have such an acute knee-joint angle, it teaches you to sit way back. And because the box is going to gauge your depth, going deep enough never really becomes a problem. Obviously when we take the box out from under them there is some adjustment because your knees have to go more forward to make it more natural, but our technique just seems to be picture perfect.
Bennett got hooked on box squats through powerlifting guru Louie Simmons, one of the most accomplished powerlifting coaches in the world. Coach of the famous Westside Barbell Club io not go down to at least parallel, this will not happen. If you Squat high, you will actually create a more dangerous situation for Hamstring injuries. Squattng high makes for strong Quads and weak Hamstrings.

I would have to say from my observations of thousands of athletes that more than half of our nations athletes perform their Squats too high. This means tens of thousands are at needless risk when it comes to Hamstring injuries. You must Squat to at least parallel. It is far better to take some weight off the bar and Squat with great technique down to parallel than to Squat sloppy and high with a heavier weight.
STATUS: A Top Priority Core Lift
     <SXkeBKMi"U6_ݷO5}͏,#vls# gVFw +Sñ P2ioOS ʈ B*-FPw$Egd.?
