All her hard work on the BFS program has paid off. So what is the secret to her blazing speed? One secret is explosive weight training. Guilfoyle has squatted 205 pounds in the gym for a max.
In the field events, LeeAnn Pekovitch also played a large role in the M-ettes victory. She won the state championship title in the discus and placed second in both the javelin and shot put.

FOOTBALL

Head football coach, Scott King, has much to be proud of. Out of 130 games played while coaching at Malta High, his ferocious Mustangs have been victorious 104 times. The Mustangs have won two state championships, earned a 2nd place, and made it to the semi-finals three years. Out of 214 students at Malta High School, 80 turned out for football this last fall. The mustangs have found out how to win and not very many kids want to miss out on it.
Malta s football season was filled with exciting moments, as they fought their way to capture the state crown. First Team All-State Quarterback, Cody Oxarart, led the Mustangs on offense. In a quarterfinal game against Fort Benton, All-State defensive tackle, Lance Spencer, shined in the limelight to help his team advance in the playoffs. In double overtime, Spencer snagged an interception and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown, leading the Mustangs to a 35-34 win. They went on to beat the Cut Bank Wolves 20-7 for the state championship title. Reflecting on the win, Coach King said, When I think about these kids in the future, I will remember a group of unselfish athletes. That s a characteristic that title teams have. Jesse Brown, Josh Roberts and Ty Salsbery were all named All-State.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Malta s Boys Basketball team won the state title in 1996 and 1998. Coach Bernie Wasser taught his players what it takes to become champions. His team listened and played as a unit. Through a lot of hard work, they rose to the top. All-State key player, RJ Tollefson, led the Mustangs in their quest to be the best.

CONCLUSION

What is the key to Malta s high level of achievement? Simply put, all athletes, regardless of sport, train on the same program. The remarkable thing about this successful athletic program is that most of the great competitors are three-sport athletes. For example, in wrestling, Lance Spencer placed third in state last year in the 189-pound class and also ran a leg on the 1,600-meter relay team that won the state title. All-State quarterback, Cody Oxarart, helped win a state championship in football and basketball and was also on the 1,600-meter relay track team that won state. What an awesome accomplishment to be able to call yourself a three-sport state champion! LeeAnn Pekovitch has achieved All-State status in track, volleybaLuv?0?v`Q G̅-4O H:e@UTb-{ċO }#蟇Tm3RCuV$GPHbjiNxXuu!E? j%tOĄDZ;P`=nHA 0Pm@|Y_U Ib_fJ 4iz^G%zdEFYV4eTDY(o"# LgR,6CT8%Ug1G)%wC相geѡVfXWQOOWoOWFЮşgXG2H,k 8ž/)JD#g8pŌv5y|+ivR`B2\zWc|b4/t[X2O.=ƮFcX%}ai GEz1j Z,AphKfr}?I g+7M,bz'Ljb!>p Z/SpƪHgGStׂ^_Siv ˙f)_֮#:v*DKzYZ%)Cqv<`КHȊ o; @y™$6:qI5 QGitney's knees came in on the Squat, remembered Coach Cross. That was the first thing we fixed.
My knees are a lot better, said Whitney. I have no problems in softball or any lift now. I have really improved. As a freshman, I was the slowest on the team an I didn't start. Last year (2nd year) I was one of the fastest and a starter.
Krystal Kennard, MNU softball coach, explained, Whitney is now a lot more aggressive and confident player.
During the summer of 1998, Coach Cross wanted Whitney to start training a little, try some Olympic competitions and see hw she likd it. Whitney said, If I didn't like it, I didn't have to stick with it. But I love competition. I decided to go for it.
Whitney has won gold medals at every Olympic meet she's attended and she passed her Level One U.S.A. Weightlifting Club coaching course. I ever thought I'd e winning gold medals. I didn't think I'd do verywell. You should have seen me when I started. It was pretty ugly, laughed Whitney. But I've worked at it. It's not something that has come easy.
One of Whitney's major goals is to qualify for next year's collegiate national meet. She currently has a 67.5 Clean and Jerk and a 45 kg Snatch for a total for 112.5 kilos (247 pounds). Whitney needs only 7.5 more kilos to qualify.
Coach Cross say, She'll get there if she wants it bad enough. Whitney competes regularly in St. Joseph, Missouri which is a national hot bed for Olympic lifting. Whitney praised, Wes Barnett (national champion) and Dennis Snethen have helped greatly. I'd like to give them credit.
Whitney lifts twice er week during her softball season and states with conviction, You are not going to getbig muscles from the way I train. I've lost body fat and gained muscle. My clothes are not as tight and I'm faster and a lot stronger and more flexible. I believe I have improved my looks through lifting. I just want to hit them over the fence and I want to gun'em at home. That's the best feeling.
Whitne
