How tough is the drug testing in Olympic lifting?
Hamman: We havethe United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), and I get drug tested randomly probably 18 times a year, and then I m tested at every competition. One USADA requirement is letting them know where I am at all times. If I m not where I m supposed to be when they come to drug test me, that s one notch against me, and three misses like that and it counts as a positive drug test. There s no way that a USADA athlete can hide from drug testing.

BFS: Do you think Olympic lifting will ever shake the common perception that all the good Olympic lifters are taking drugs?
Hamman: I don t know. It s really starting to clean up, and they have formed the World Anti-Doping Association, whch is doing some international drug testing. It will never be totally clean no sport is ever going to be totally clean but as for the top lifters in the US, there s absolutely no way that we can take drugs because of how often we re drug tested. Most other countries don t have the random tests like us, so it would be possible for them to still take drugs although I m not saying that they are.

BFS: What s the training atmosphere like at the Olympic training center?
Hamman: Everybody is here to be better, so in the gym there s always kind of a psyched feeling. When I m home I train by myself, and I find I cannot lift as much weight.

BFS: Was it tough for you s of the Glenelg Gladiators ignited from the workshop and the lessons learned from the tragic death of their teammate J.T., the team also received inspiration from above--it came in the form of an airplane
carrying a banner reading, Go Gladiators. Go Elevens!
That amazing moment came from the same parent who had volunteered to put up half the money for the seminar, the father of player Joe McDonald, who, as a graduating senior is now awaiting his appointment at West Point, along with fellow teammate, Kyle Johnston.
The banner was pure inspiration, says Davis. We were in the end zone ready to start the game when it flew overhead. What a moment for the team!
The plane and banner showed up again for the next game, just in time to turn the score in the Gladiators favor, and again for the first game of the playoffs, which unfortunately, the Gladiators didn t win. Against their nemesis Forestville, the defending champs, Glenelg lost 20 points to 7. But they had made it to the playoffs, and that effort was pure eleven!

Where from Here?

As a fitting end to the season, Coach Davis was named the county s Coach of the Year.
