Saffer was on the field for at least 70 plays in games against Ohio State, Arizona, Oregon and Oregon State. The following year he started all 12 games, missing just one offensive snap the entire season. Again a workhouse, he took at least 80 snaps in games against Alabama, California, Fresno State and Arizona State.
By 2001 Saffer had become a leader on the offensive line, and he stepped up his play another notch to earn second-team All-Pac-10 conference honors. In the game against Washington in which DeShaun Foster broke the single-game rushing record with 301 yards, Saffer graded out at 97 percent. For the year, he averaged at least an 88 percent grade in eight games and racked up 46 KO blocks. Unquestionably, Saffer had become the best bodyguard a quarterback could hope for.
Entering the 2002 season as an Outland Trophy candidate, Saffer and his three other returning starters on the offensive line expected to enjoy a winning season and see post-season action. What Saffer didn't expect to see was his photo on the cover of the UCLA Football Media Guide, a rare occurrence for a lineman. I would say I was surprised, but at the same time I felt that I had put in the hard work and I've become a leader on this team -- and I didn't give them any reason not to put me on the cover, he quips. I feel like I've made those decisions easier for our marketing department because I've done the best I could here.
Midway through the season the team has had only one conference loss and has become an offensive powerhouse, averaging 33.5 points per game. Their biggest upset was on their opening game against Colorado State, which was ranked 19th going into Pasadena and had the advantage of having already played two games. The Bruins defeated the Rams 30-19 in a thrilling match that saw the Rams ahead going into the fourth quarter.
Saffer has had great memories so far playing on the 2002 UCLA team. Other than the fact that there's a lot of experience on this line, one of the great things about this offensive line is that everybody on the line enjoys hanging out together, off the field as well as on the field, says Saffer. This really promotes team unity and even helps us on the field because we're able to communicate better -- it seems like we know what each other is thinking befoght back on the glutes and hips. Make sure the lower back remains concave in a locked-in position. Then, shift your power upward to drive the hips and legs in a forward, upwardsurge of momentum.
Make sure you use your powerful hip and buttock muscles including the tendons. If you go down and just touch the box, or bench, like most people, then all you develop are the quadriceps. This would be a serious mistake for an athlete. Finally, the athlete should drive up on his toes in an explosive type action at the last part of the lift. If the weight is too heavy to do this, the athlete should always try and have the feeling of coming up on the toes. The athlete should have the same feeling of blocking, tackling, rebounding or releasing a track implement at this final stage.

THE FINER POINTS
Obviously the height of the box makes a difference in the amount of weight that can be handled. Th ideal starting point is about two-inches above parallel. Sometimes the tall, skinny athlete needs a higher level in order to get his technique correct. The same is often true with the over-fat younger athlete. The bottom line is control. If the athlete can t control his downward movement without plopping, then simply raise the box.
Normally, I l}vmk){T W5x7aI͑FO@=V) ޵) ̾j0mc$c#γw;1yåzn O&clWr9%u;߀Gf 25XKIҜӾxZ3SU(Pd 3P\M,r۬ecNV#mVzyf1'H$rlG K,̐ #wmLw'ӟCj"TBI0 s#YBUh݀d* Йn'-wrY6'>s(a dHjt2#(6`@Ji0)7#iZBYBp۲PE_1#\p%BCzݫBKy[R`ztc#l <pd c85=Af9>k]L,@ r{gt_ LP4kvJĤۈA\xUgqB~9χ,ȟFm1j7{ʱo79c>]Kn>#t{n Zo up the hill for each other.
