It really hurt!"&nbsp; The doctors told him there was nothing they could do.&nbsp; But, Oerter persisted.&nbsp; So, the doctors agreed to try a method where they froze the muscle, taped it, gave him ammonia capsules and then hoped for the best.</P> <P>Since each competitor gets to keep their best throw from the previous days preliminaries, Oerter could have stayed in the top eight without over extending himself.&nbsp; However, he said, "I just thought about the four years of hard work and those 1460 days. &nbsp;I did not year s team who either started for us or who played a ton of football for us, and there s a natural tendency for players to think they can just show up. We will certainly make our kids understand that s not the case, and I can assure you the other coaches at Garrett High School will do the same. <br>Being at the top of his field at a school that is enjoying tremendous success and pride, Andy Thomas has some insight to offer to anyone interested in emulating his success:  I ve only been coaching for 10 years, but I ve heard all the stories of the guys that I ve worked with about the way things used to be. I think that one thing is true, and that is kids not only need discipline but deep down they want discipline. They want structure. <br> They also want coaches who will work them hard, and at Garrett High School we have coaches in all sports who do just that. Our kids know that we re going to demand a lot of them on the practice fields and in the weightroom; but when it s all said and done, they also know we care about them. We show them we are interested in what s going on in their lives, and I think that s very important to kids.  <br>Just as Vick was able to ease into the football program, Coach Gentry has designed a program that gets his players ready for some serious lifting. One of Gentry s first priorities with freshmen is cleaning up their lifting technique, especially with squats, and introducing them to speed-strength training with an emphasis on the Olympic lifts. For example, Gentry says he ll start their off-season training with the hang clean and the push press, then progress through the year to the power clean and the push jerk. He also emphasizes agility training, being especially big on the BFS dot drill, as well as flexibility work.<br>During the off-season, the players spend only three days a week in the weightroom for about 90 minutes.
