The biggest thing we did this year was challenge them to a degree that we weren t sure they would be able to accomplish, says Galt. Some of the workouts, some of the intensity---we weren t sure that they would physically beable to accomplish without overtraining. But they stayed with te program, and by the time the season rolled around in ugust, they were the strongest, heaviest, fastest team we d ever had.
When asked what advice he would give to high school players who hope to someday play for Maryland, Galt replied, One of the biggest problems with high school athletes is time constraints, because many athletes are multi-sport. What we recommend is that the high school athlete try to figure out a way to become more consistent in the weight room, even if it s only 45 minutes, twice a week. We have many kids from well-established high school programs who come here, and when they come here they just explode---and that s because we train year-round. That s why it s always nice to have athletes from high schools who were on the BFS program---they have a good foundation.
One player whose potential exploded under Galt s st in Las Vegas this fall and I met a college coach from Delaware. When we got to talking about the numbers that I threw on Sunday, he said I would have dominated his conference. I thought, A 46-year-old man would have won his conference that s amazing.
Dan s athletic accomplishments and practical coaching wisdom eventually caught the attention of BFS President Dr. Greg Shepard. The first time Dan met Greg was in 1980 at the Hll Air Force Base Powerlifting meet, where Dan was competing for the Utah State Powerlifting Team. Recalls Dan, It was about two in the morning during the deadlift competition, and I was sitting around in the warm-up room when Greg came up to me and asked me what I was opening with. I said I was sarting light at 573 pounds, just to get a mark, and I think it almost knocked Greg down. After that we kept bumping into each othe at competitions, and then I started working out at the pper Limit Gym when it opened up. That was a grea place to work out because the Utah Jazz trained there, and Greg and his BFS staff made certain they took their lifting seriously. One day when I was working out Greg asked me if I wanted to work at the gym, and I accepted. That started my relationship with BFS.
If there s one major struggle Dan has had as an athlete, it s with his bodyweight. In college it was as high as 272, which Dan says was pretty solid because he was lifting hard. Dan was able to lean down after college; he quit training from 1981 to 1987 to concentrate on his career. When he got back into training he allowed his bodyweight to go up again, and by 1995 he acceped the fact that he was fat and had to do smething about it.
To get lean, Dan went on a low-carb, high-protein diet. Dan s description of a good breakfast: meat, eggs and other stuff. A bad breakfast: not meat, eggs, and other stuff. In a few months he dropped 50 pounds. It s funny, I got down to 206, and I found that I could throw the discus just as far as I did when I was heavier and my injuries disappeared.

The State of the Sport

Although Dan says the US stilik8?J{[.s|LZ_L:s\7IZ2WiG j+\^&յIﮚyK*uÊ2W?Ł/uySg7W>Ӽi\yk0j7Q]^AqbOKJx|1scSu.'jN }92p'0! %$V, >4.llf z^CW2MwҚ9[1ۖ~:uI K992ۖIÃr_)2t-L66ݕ34W 4_*o5 J,aC*[I38r+;EN^8A5ŭBR1/X_94"tE$37=x^.d0<һ75B+2GvMS.9$~R)#}ad6 ڥݺĎrDen.*R0inޤKg) yKaj/qa01E<,U7U?nj`2^>\ݩi]^URK|@\v$oZ2?dR|פ ptPbX.(nI%4u[+KYR;{خRxf ]$P_Ϙ#1eʀd9o=L{rmO3NHK}' ]Ҕ:w֏hwӭFqxWhkϫ#}\I9L1 !&Kh7~ھ,rߠ4>Jv49`q5z 5۷p~܂XUG_À|[Sn Uڎ$vk-QN K~ҧ;1>&;q?XݲM#r-yÂsrvX45w2*5~`=ON]1V5_q}nyݸݝdCl~Z#y +5\Kn^X{޻ر ۮl ӹ>!b{ (ݥ/SE$zSF~3$.45x!x^!Oevta] z=KC%@V+~%;ySɰHV-o I$eW#)_K[v9$đm@G|cmqlsOYY&>9V$Cˋݰ
