Early in the season we lost three close games in a row to fall to a 1-4 record. Rather than throw in the towel, our kids rallied after those three heartbreaking losses and knocked off an undefeated team. We finished 4-5 and won our last game. <br>Our team knows that we could have easily been in the playoff hunt. Yet perhaps the greatest tribute to this group of kids is that they didn t dwell on what could have been or what we should have done, they focused on winning today.<br>Coach Shepard, your seminar made a profound impact on our players and coaches. It was the best financial investment our football program has ever made. We already have captains for next year s team. One of them came up with the idea to have stickers for our helmets with the number eleven. The kids all want to do this. Another captain wants to paint the number 11 in the weight room and the locker room. Our team will be committed to touch it as they pass. There are three ways to look at knees for correct squatting alignment: Knees out, in or forward.</DIV> <DIV align=left>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV align=left><STRONG>Knees Out: </STRONG>(See Figure 2)&nbsp; You will be able to see this problem easily whether the athletes are in the bleachers or actually squatting.&nbsp; The knees-out problem can easily be corrected by just widening out the athlete's stance.&nbsp; Widen out the stance until the knees are aligned directly ovr the toes.&nbsp; Squatting with the knees out will put unwanted pressure on the lateral collateral ligaments.</DIV> <DIV align=left>&nbsp;</DIV> <DIV align=left><STRONG>Knees In: </STRONG>(See Figure 3)&nbsp; This problem is quite common with women athletes and junior high age boys.&nbsp;Again, you will be able to see the knees-in problem from the bleain Ritter, a junior who increased his bench press 60 pounds this past year to break an APAWPA world record for his age group (255 pounds at 165 pounds bodyweight). Another junior, Thomas Wright, increased his power clean by 60 pounds and his squat by 75 pounds last year.  After a discussion with clinician Bobby Poss, I began holding a fitness competition in May that tests athletes on the bench ress, parallel squat, NFL shuttle, 40-yard sprint, and the Smyrna shuttle [a 300-yard shuttle, broken down into 30-yard sprints]. The athletes received points for the weights lifted and fastest running times.
