Evangel Christian Academy was crowned 1999 National High School Football Champions by Fox Sports after a hard fought victory over West Monroe. The game was billed as the biggest in Louisiana history. West Monroe was also undefeated in the 5-A ranks and coached by Don Shows. It was amazing as 42,000 attended the game.
Immediately after the game, Fox Sports wanted to have Midland Lee from Texas, the USA Today National Champions, play Evangel on national television to crown a true national champion. Now that would have been something but for a variety of reasons the game did not materialize.
Brock Berlin, Evangel’s QB, was selected as the game’s MVP in their 20-14 victory. Brock also has been selected as the Gatorade Player of the Year. Brock has already finished his graduation requirements and so he enrolled at the University of Florida in January in order to take full advantage of spring football for the Gators. Brock earned great grades and has demonstrated remarkable leadership by example. Brock’s work ethic and vision are without question an eleven. He is just outstanding in every area. Brock Berlin is our choice for this year’s BFS Athlete of the Year award. His complete story will appear in a future journal. Our congratulations to Evangel and Brock Berlin.
